Prior to my visit to Mayfield Lavender Fields, whenever lavender fields were mentioned, my imagination immediately took me to those idyllic purple hills in Valensole, France, (you know the ones that are captured on Instagram a million times). However we are privileged to have our very own sweeping purple carpets in England. So you’re probably asking where in England. The Cotswolds? The South Downs?Believe it or not but Mayfield Lavender is farmed in the ever-so-glamourous location of…Sutton, Croydon. Who would’ve thought that Zone 6 would be home to this huge, fragrant swathe of deep violet flowers?
I took my time wandering through the endless rows of purple haze, seeing all the bees and butterflies busy at work in 30 degree heat completely forgetting that I was only ten minutes away from Croydon city centre.
For only £1 pound entry, this memorable day out is great value. You can spend the day absorbing the natural surroundings and the extensive views of the Surrey Hills. There are tractor rides for young kids, a shop selling all things lavender such as oils and bath products. You can even purchase freshly-cut organic bunches of the flowers. There are two cafes serving delicious fresh lavender-flavoured, macaroons, lemon and lavender drizzle cake, hot/cold lavender infused teas and much more.
Mayfield Lavender Farm is open now until Mid September.
